Library Collections

Book, Thesis and Serial Collection

The print book, thesis and serial collection is spread over the Library's three floors, and is shelved in one sequence according to the Library of Congress classification. The sequence begins in the southwest corner of the ground floor, Level 0, and continues as follows:

  • Level 0 (Ground Floor) : A - HD
  • Level 1 : HE - QM
  • Level 2 (Top Floor) : QP - Z

A new items display can be found on Level 0, beside the main stairs. New items are listed on the Library Catalogue New Items search.

Electronic books and serials are all described in the Library Catalogue and most are also listed alphabetically on the Electronic Resource Finder. Lincoln has significant electronic book collections in the area of agriculture, environmental science, business and finance. Electronic journal collections cover most of Lincoln’s subject areas and backfiles to earliest volumes are growing. New electronic resources are listed on the Library Catalogue New Items search.

Ngā Kete e Toru Collection

This collection brings core Māori material together into one place to reflect the holistic nature of the Māori knowledge world. The collection, which includes stunning artwork, is located in the southwest area of Level 0.

Reference Collection

Shelved in the iZone on Level 0, this collection includes dictionaries, encyclopedia, yearbooks, New Zealand telephone books, New Zealand university calendars, statistical information and New Zealand legislation.

University Calendars

Copies of the current Lincoln University calendar (http://www.lincoln.ac.nz/calendar/) are also kept in the Reference Collection, at the iZone Help Desk and on Restricted Loan. Calendars from other New Zealand universities are available in the Reference Collection. There are copies of all New Zealand university calendars which may be borrowed in the Serials Collection. Links to online versions are maintained in the Library Catalogue.

Maps and Atlases

Some atlases are kept in the Reference Collection while individual maps are kept in cabinets on the west side of Level 0. Those in the map cabinets include a complete set of New Zealand topographical, national park and track maps, and selected cadastral, land inventory, street and farm location maps.
The Library also has a collection of soil maps, which are all recorded in the Library catalogue. An index to many of these is kept on top of the map cabinets and at the iZone Help Desk.

There is campus-wide online access to topographic and cadastral maps using FreshMap.

GIS datasets are also available.

Newspapers

[map]

Daily issues of The Press, The Dominion Post, The Otago Daily Times, The New Zealand Herald, The Waikato Times and The Southland Times are available in the Newspaper Area on the west side of Level 0. A number of online World News sources are available via the Library Web site.

Theses

Copies of all Lincoln theses are kept by the Library and all are recorded in the Catalogue. All theses deposited from 2008 on, as well as some earlier titles, are available online from the Lincoln University Research Archive. Theses deposited prior to 2008 are available to borrow for the standard loan period.

Where there is only one copy of a thesis it is held in the Thesis Archive and may be used only in the Library. (Ask at the Collections Enquiry Desk on Level 1).

Time Out Collection

A collection of fiction and general interest material for recreational reading is located on Level 1, at the back of the Library beside the spiral staircase. Funds for this collection are donated by the Students Association but are limited. Please let us know what you would like for this collection and we will try to satisfy your request. You can use the Book Recommendation Form.

Archive Collection

This collection  includes Lincoln College and Lincoln University publications, as well as fragile, historic publications, that may be available for use in the Library or Collections Office.  Please ask at the Collections Enquiry Desk on Level 1.
